Hello!

Today in class we completed 3 centers to help us prepare and review for our assessment coming up THIS FRIDAY on mixtures and pure substances.

Center 1: vocabulary (see below for list)

Center 2: Model compounds using Legos

Center 3: sort for mixtures and pure substances and then sort for heterogeneous and homogenous

Tonight’s homework: finish any vocabulary including a picture / sketch for each word

Vocabulary

Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space

Compound: A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined

Atom: the basic particle from which all elements are made

Molecule: A particle made of two or more atoms bonded together

Element: A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means

Mixtures: Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined

Pure Substance: an element, compound or molecule

Heterogeneous: A mixture in which pure substances are unevenly distributed throughout the mixture (think Italian salad dressing)

Homogeneous: a mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture (think ketchup)
